A Member of TLHR Thailand Talks About the Latest Campaign

The Big Interview talks to Akarachai Chaimaneekarakate, who is the Advocacy Lead, International Advocacy at the Thai Lawyers for Human Rights (TLHR), on the latest campaign involving the issue of lèse-majesté law. He mentioned the People's Amnesty campaign in which this proposed amnesty bill would grant amnesty to individuals charged under Article 112. He said, "We believe amnesty is an integral first step to political reconciliation. As I’m answering this question, more than 800 criminal cases remain ongoing. If the government insists on prosecuting every single case to the very end, this cycle of prosecution will plague Thailand for the next several years, if not more. Political conflict will never be resolved if the government continues to prosecute people on the basis of their legitimate political beliefs, for prosecution is the oxygen on which the fire of political conflict burns."
