Scholar William J. Jones Talks about the Current State of Thai Monarchy
July 10, 2024
112WATCH talked to William J. Jones on the shifting political landscape of Thailand. Regarding the monarchy, he said, "The Thai monarchy with regard to the institutions’ relationship with the Thai people has changed a lot during the current reign. I think this is seen in the distance and connection between the institution and people. Distance in this sense shows itself through engagement with the public. Much of the interaction, especially post Covid has largely been through symbology rather than physical interaction as was seen in the first years of the current King’s reign. I remember in previous decades the evening royal news on TV and radio would be substantial, at least 10-15 minutes. Currently, there are days when there is only one piece of royal news, and the broadcast is done in a couple of minutes."
