112WATCH interviews Tisana Choonhavan from the People’s Party on issues concerning lèse-majesté law.
June 11, 2025
"The problem in recent years lies in the broad and vague interpretation of the law, allowing acts not explicitly stated to be construed as lèse-majesté. As a result, the law has been used as a political weapon against opponents and in personal disputes. Because the statute imposes a minimum sentence of 3 years (equivalent to involuntary manslaughter), courts are unable to issue lighter sentences even for minor acts. Crucially, anyone can file a complaint, unlike similar laws in constitutional monarchies where enforcement is strictly regulated."
