Cordial Bedfellows: Thailand and Myanmar

The article argues that the Thai government under Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has transitioned from a passive bystander to an active facilitator of autocracy by granting diplomatic legitimacy to Min Aung Hlaing’s sham transition to a "civilian" presidency. By sending high-level envoys and prioritizing "business as usual," Bangkok has effectively discarded ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus and fractured the bloc’s unified front against the junta. This shift signals the formalization of a regional "Illiberal International," where Thailand coordinates with neighboring military regimes to shield dictators from accountability, ultimately betraying both international human rights standards and the democratic aspirations of the Thai and Myanmar people.
